To better understand someone, pause before judging, ask an open question about what matters to them, and reflect back what you heard. Check, “Did I understand you?” Then respond after they’ve had a chance to clarify.

    A small practice for your next conversation

    1. Pause long enough to hear the other person out.

    2. Ask an open question: “What feels most important to you about this?”

    3. Reflect the point you heard in your own words.

    4. Check your understanding: “Did I get that right? What might I be missing?”

    5. Respond once the other person has had a chance to clarify.
